Instructional Game

Imagine: You're playing right field with your team up by one with two outs in the ninth inning anda runner on second. The ball falls just in front of you... Now you must make a tough choice: Do you try to win the game by throwing the runner out at home (thereby risking putting the winning run on second), or do you allow the runner to score while protecting a tie by holding the runner at first?

As a Master's student in Instructional Systems Technology, my focus of study is on the value of simulations and serious gaming in the learning process. More specifically, my main area of interest is the use of simulations to improve human performance and decision-making skills in athletes. For the capstone to my undergraduate degree, my team built a training module for the IU men's basketball team with the help of coach Dan Dakich. The game was a simple Flash-based simulation, but it's value grew with each high school coach and player we talked to.

For this class, my hope is to take the concept of building a decision-making simulation for athletes and expand and perfect the execution of the Instructional design concepts already established. The beauty of this project is that these methods can be applied to any sport: baseball, football, tennis, soccer, etc...

My personal skills lie in project management and design, although I do have basic programming/ graphic design experience. I'd like to work with an artist and programmer, as well as another designer, to get this project off the ground!

Very cool, man! It could be a good start that designing sport games which need the player to "think" more than just "hitting" the gamepad!
